Garage design for the modern guy is just my way of thinking about how far the development of the garage has come from the age of turning it into the extra bedroom for your home. My mother’s garage design, bless her heart has always been to take over my fathers garage. She lays down carpet to make the garage into a storage area for her next garage sale. Obviously I and my Dad were not allowed into the now hallowed space, so my Father retaliated by building small workshops next to the garage. He also needed storage sheds and tin roofed carports. This is sort of the reverse of designing a garage. I feel it is just turning your design inside out. Being grown I have always rebelled against the whole concept. I throw everything I can into one side, mowers, tools, paint cans, caulk, oil power tools, Etc… then dig through the piles for whatever I need for Honeydews. I then squeeze my car into whatever space remains. No carpet just paint and oil for the floor. This has resulted in some pretty sad fix up costs whenever I move. I have learned to overcome however, after seeing garages turned into virtual showrooms. The variety of cabinets, racks, overheads, lifts, turn a rounds, storage devices, and the concept of an actual floor of something besides plain concrete soaking up all stains has changed my views on the design and utility of a proper garage. Just looking at the variety of high tech flooring solutions can be dizzying. Especially the pricing for some of the design floors in some garages. Most are basically Epoxies or poly urea with aggregates embedded or strewn on top, but there are literally hundreds of different composites of the two. Cheap epoxy floors may only last 6 months while some floors can barely be removed with a diamond grinder and will be there till the concrete under them disintegrates. The two extremes may look exactly alike so it pays to study up a little. Just because it is billed as commercial grade doesn’t make it stay on your floor, or make it resistant to sunlight, one of the real failures with an epoxy coating. Anyway whether you want fiber optic lit floors or just a basic glossy with vinyl flakes on top, your garage design starts with your floor.
